Every five minutes of fun will win you
50 minutes of time. Take five, win 50.
As a person, I naturally tend to be more serious than funny and playful. I don’t joke around or pull pranks and it takes a lot to make me laugh out loud. It is really thanks to my kids that I have rediscovered the power of playing. My children are too young to understand a deep conversation so we mostly connect through playing and cuddling. And, to be honest, I sometimes find the playing part challenging and very boring. Playing peekaboo and racing with toy cars just isn’t my idea of having a good time. But because I care and this is their way to connect and have fun with me, I do it. Not surprisingly though, when I am too busy I tend to postpone the playtime.
When I am in the green brain, the everyday activities become playful. We sing and dance as we tidy up the kitchen together and I don’t mind that it takes an extra couple of minutes. And the truth is that when I just do it, when we just go on the trampoline and jump as high as we can, I love it. When I put my baby on my back and together we chase Sem as we pretend to be monsters that are going to eat him, I love it. I love the way they engage in it and laugh, I love the connection, I love the shift in dynamic it creates and I love the feeling of the endorphins it releases in my brain.
As adults, we might need a bit of help creating some regular playtime. Spending time with children and pets can be of great assistance but also playing a sport, board games or just sprinkling some water or soap bubbles in your partner’s face can do the trick. Opportunities for play are everywhere; we just need to realize that play is one of the fundamental elements of a happy, fulfilled and productive life.
Our brain and the rest of our body work amazingly well when we give them the fuel they need. When we don’t give our body the fuel it needs, we can still be productive but we will have to work harder to achieve the same outcomes, and stress becomes inevitable.
In order to function to the best of our ability, we need all the elements that plants and mammals need. We need real food, clean water and plenty of sun. We need fresh air, enough good-quality sleep and movement. We also need a couple of good relationships, routines that work for us, and plenty of time to play and have fun. Without these elements we can survive but we can’t thrive. The good news is that you don’t have to perfect all of these in order to have a great working system. Your brain and the rest of your body are flexible and resilient. It isn’t until you begin to fall short in many of these areas that your energy levels suffer.
